Developing our Addition and Subtraction

This year in Kahurangi we have started a new programme for maths that focuses on helping our students identify where they are at and what they need to work on (and their next steps).  We started last week with the kids doing some little diagnostic snapshot word problems.  Each snapshot related to the key learning ideas for addition and subtraction and this was shared as the focus for each problem.  Teachers marked and then we sat and looked at what we could do and our next steps and then our students chose a focus for their learning.  They then have to carry out three activities to "Learn It" (the concept); three activities to "Practise It" and then they are required to "Prove It" by giving an example of how they have solved the problem effectively... don't worry parents, they have to do another example in two weeks to prove they've remembered what they were learning.

All of our students have been really enjoyed taking greater responsibility for this and at the end of our first week of maths, we had some kids who had worked so hard they were already up to proving their learning.

Here is a fantastic example from Brad, which clearly shows all his understanding about adding and subtracting fractions (and more).  We look forward to adding more examples to share and be sure to ask your child to ask you to show you where they are at the next time you are in class and to share with you what they have been doing.

Well Done to Brad - who has effectively proven that he has this concept.
